Past juror decision making research on how religiosity affects judgments of guilt and character shows mixed results. Some research has found there to be a similarity-liking leniency effect when jurors and a defendant share the same religious in-group membership. In this case, jurors are more lenient when making sentencing decisions (Miller & Bornstein, 2006). Other research has shown that there is a black sheep effect, whereby jurors judge a defendant more harshly when they share the same religious in-group membership (Johnson, 1985). In either case, religious in-group bias has been shown to influence judgments of guilt and sentencing decisions. To further understand the relationship between religiosity and judgments of guilt and character, social identity theory was used to frame this study. There are three main hypotheses. The first proposes that if a juror and a defendant share the same group membership (Christian or atheist/agnostic), the juror will be more likely to judge the defendant as less guilty. The second hypothesis proposes that if a juror and a defendant share the same group membership, the juror will make more positive character judgments (moral and good) about the defendant. The last hypothesis proposes that if a defendant commits robbery and murder, the juror will be more likely to judge the defendant as guilty. The present study manipulated defendant religiosity (became Christian versus became atheist) and crime type (robbery versus robbery and murder) and its effect on participant's judgement of guilt and character (good and moral). Two hundred and ninety two participants (ages 18--77) took part in the survey via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Participants were paid fifty cents for completing the survey. The findings generally confirmed my hypotheses that judgments would be harsher toward a more violent, serious crime, and that judgments of guilt and character varied depending on participant group membership and defendant conversion.
