This program design is based on a review of the literature on jurors' hindsight and emotional biases during verdict deliberation and the negative effects of pre-trial publicity on those decisions. Biases have been found to affect how efficiently people accept versus renounce the validity of what they see and are told in determining what they believe as well as their ability to guard against erroneous beliefs. Failure to identify predisposed jurors results in costly consequences for courts and litigants. This project seeks modifications in the use of the existing data to assist jurors in criminal trials in reaching unbiased decisions during verdict deliberation. The Assertive Juror Management Program attempts to increase jurors' awareness of the existence of personal biases using strategies such as considering opposite explanations, identifying emotionality on self and others, and counteracting subjective media influences.
